Sometimes I think the best reading list for business is not about business at all. Just finished "The Orphan Master's Son," an interesting fictional look into the psyche of North Korea. Anyone who is familiar with some of the projects I'm working lately can understand how that one could resonate.
Currently reading "Born Fighting," a non-fictional account of the history of the Scots-Irish and their impact on shaping the egalitarian rugged individualism of not only the South but the United States as a whole. Thanks Ron for recommending it. Very timely as I just returned from a business trip to Scotland. Seems I've spent the last 25 years studying other cultures; I guess its finally time to explore my own heritage which I'm told is mostly English but likely includes a smattering of Scots-Irish lineage. James Webb's book takes you from Brave Heart to Trailer Parks. Even if you are not from the South, this book will help you get in touch with the inner Noble Redneck that lives inside all Americans from Maine to Hawaii.
I believe that prior to these, the last book i read was Ghengis Khan, Lord of the Bow; for my money, required reading for anyone dealing with either private equity firms or Chinese investors; both of which are in my inbox as I write this.
